Winix 5500-2 Air Purifier Review
Sometime ago, I tested the Winix 5500-2 air purifier, I was so pleased that I kept pondering on it’s price and how the Winix has maintained it’s price range even though it is one of their most popular product. It is a necessary ‘must have ‘set of features like the HEPA filter, carbon filter, and auto mode otherwise known as complete purifying specification. As you read you would .see the Winix 5500-2 ‘must have set ‘ and you can contrast between it and other identical range air purifiers
Winix 5500-2 review
- Looking at its features, we can all agree that it has a good and affordable price range
- Posses a good CADR that covers medium room size through its 4-stage PlasmaWave filtration.
- The true-HEPA filter works perfectly in filtering dirt and other microorganisms just as it has been advertised
- The AOC carbon filter is on its own rather than of a cheap out on the carbon pre-filter sheet
- The remote control can be accessed completely as well as the mode selector
- Features four fans and an auto/Sleep mode that has a light sensor adjust the LED indicator brightness on its own according to the room ambient light
- Posses an already ready timer option (1,4,8 hours)
- It comes upgraded 2 years warranty unlike the Winix 5500
- The AOC carbon is a good thing but it does not give a strong sharp smell unlike most air bag purifiers
- There was a brief moment where the 5500-2 responds to the particles of my environment while we were testing. Probably the odor sensor needs some tidy up or maybe the sensor detects whenever it wants.
15 x 23.6 x 8.2 in
(38.1 x 59.9 x 20.8 cm)
15.4 lb (7 kg)
The Winix 5500-2 posses an attractive design that is both new and modern just like the 5300-2 . With a moderately suitable dimension, this housing air cleaner features a 15 x 23.6 x 8.2 and weighs 15.4Ib of weight . The construction is strong, fitted and does not have any noticeable gab just like it should be . Its entire body is basically made up of plastic even the front panel. It is not the normal less expensive, light ones that you think would emit bad air to the surrounding with a little heat .The position of the air ventilation shows a good air purifier set up . It has an opening positioned at the front /sides where air enters and also another opening at the upper back where air leaves . It has a back handle where you can hold on while carrying the 5500-2 around.
The Winix 5500-2 posses a small tilted control section at the top. The whole control unit contains a left unit logo and 5 uniformly spaced buttons. Directly on the center, it features a good air indicator bar that circles among blue, amber and red. It posses an 11 light indicator, an odor/light sensor as well as a tiny filter reset button. Aside from the on/off switch, I will gladly explain the 5500-2 buttons bit by bit. The auto and sleep mode pattern is enabled by the mode button .The plasma wave button situated at the center switches on/off the hydroxyl functions . There is a fan speed button that aims at regulating the speed of the four fans. There is timer button that enables changeover between the 1,4 or 8 hours pre set settings
The reset button switches off the change filter indicator light and also adjusts the count. There is the presence of an odor sensor for the detection of odor within its environment. The light sensor notices the ambient light and adjusts the LED indicator brightness on its own. Aside from the filter reset button, almost all the function are right there on the remote control.
Generally we love the clear labelled control with much corroborative indicators. We had just a little bit of complaint which is that the touch button does not have a touchy feel compared to most of the air purifier
Concluding the winix 5500-2 ‘complete purifying specification’. Firstly, the 4-stage filtration with PlasmaWave Technology, 4 speeds with auto/ sleep mode. Odor/ light sensor, digital screen with AQ indicator, and remote control. And then lastly, Ozone safe Certified by CARB, AHAM listed, ENERGY STAR rated and 2 years warranty.
Airflow, speed, and CADR
360 sq. ft. (33 m2)
53 – 226 cfm (90 – 384 m3/h)
Winix 5500-2 air purifier takes over from the earlier 5500 setup with a little bump 360 sq. ft. purifying coverage (2 air charges). It is a perfect fit for medium sized bedrooms even though placement of the 5500-2 in the sitting room isn’t a bad idea . It has an air flow delivery rate of 53 – 226 cfm between its four fan speed. The airflow chamber has shown just how stable it is and that is not bad at all. Aside from the 4 fan speed operation, the air cleaner also has the auto/Sleep mode. Activating the auto mode does autonomous cleaning based on the air quality of the environment while the sleep mode much more easier . It reduces the speed of the fan and switches off the quality air indicator light and as such the air purifier can run quietly at night.
The 3 CADR of Winix 5500-2 surpasses our 200 cfm benchmark. Outstanding for an air purifier of its type . Dust CADR is at 243 cfm (upgraded marginally from the previous version). Pollen and Smoke CADR are at 246 cfm and 232 cfm respectively. From the figures itself, the airflow delivery output is at a satisfying level. It will have more than enough airflow to remove all types of indoor airborne irritants.
WHAT’S INSIDE COUNT
The Winix 5500-2 has a 4-stage filtration namely, pre-filter, True HEPA, Carbon Filter, PlasmaWave technology. The pre-filter traps large particles reducing the work stress of the HEPA. The protected True HEPA filter focuses on microscopic allergens as small as 0.3 microns. The AOC Advanced Granular Carbon filter functions as a deodorization carbon and helps to catch indoor smoke and odors that’s within range. The PlasmaWave technology produces Hydroxyls to help neutralize allergens, germs, and odors .
The only differences between Winix 5500-2 and 5300-2 PlasmaWave are seen in the filters. The 5500-2 uses an advanced AOC carbon filter while the 5300-2 uses carbon pre-filter.
On the whole, the 360 square feet and 243 cfm dust CADR are highly effective in filtering initial dust and hair. 99.97% True HEPA filter is exceptional in getting rid of pet dander, mold, pollen, bacteria, and viruses. The AOC Carbon Filter does a very good job in removing cigarette smoke, VOCs, radon, ammonia and pet odors.
26.6 – 60+ dB
5 – 90 W
The noise level between the 5500-2 and the old model is quite similar. 26.6 – 60+ dB Noise level is beyond any doubt soft both at low and medium speed. Though at high/ turbo speed, the noise the fan makes becomes more audible and this can be unbearable for some people. But thanks to the new upgrades made to the 5500-2 you can now lock in on Sleep mode at low speed while you’re sleeping. The noise from the PlasmaWave can be easily ignored but just in case you don’t feel like ignoring it you can also deactivate it. Energy usage is exclusively dependent on the fan speed, Also to better manage energy usage you can chose to put the purifier either on sleep mode or auto mode, but there isn’t much difference between the two.
At what cost
Annual Filter Cost
REPLACEMENT FILTERS / ESTIMATED COST
Surprisingly the Winix 5500-2 air purifier is cheaper than the first model 5500. This is accounting for a newer design and an improved specification. The better model is undoubtedly well reflected in its mid-range group despite having a lower price point. Winix 5500-2 filter replacement is definitely not what you will classify as expensive but that doesn’t make it cheap either, but at least it comes with an annually bundled pack of True HEPA and carbon filters.
Compared with the likes of Honeywell and Blueair models, the Winix 5500-2 is satisfactorily priced. We recommend you buy from Amazon directly as it has the best deals there is. And it also ships very fast with a 30-days return policy and of course the sheer Amazon convenience. But in a situation whereby you don’t want to buy from Amazon, Winix official channel offers great seasonal deal where the price fluctuates with time.
WINIX 5500-2 VS COWAY AP-1512HH
It is really difficult to pick between these two because they are both of very high recommendations. But we will be going with 5500-2 for the following reasons;
- The standalone AOC carbon filter
- Its low pricing
But besides the above the two air purifiers have the same 4 stage filtration, airflow performance and 300plus square feet coverage and the same 230plus CADR, also air quality sensors, timer and auto mode can be found on both air purifiers.
WINIX 5500-2 VS HONEYWELL HPA300
With features like auto/sleep mode, air quality indicator and a remote control, it is an easy win for the 5500-2 On paper, but in reality the Honeywell HPA300 is indeed a breathtaking machine despite not having any of the above listed features, but it does perform better than the 5500-2 in airflow with a 300cfm CADR, which resulted to it having a broader coverage of 465 square feet Compared to the 5500-2’s 300, But even with that the cheap online price if the 5500-2 can’t simply be overlooked, hence our choice is still the 5500-2.
WINIX 5500-2 VS 6300-2
If you are reluctant to chose between the Winix 5500-2 and 6300-2, you are definitely not the only one. Though 5500-2 is our pick as it is cheaper and can easily be purchased online. The 5500-2 also utilizes an arguably better smoke and odor filtration. Advanced Granular Carbon Filter for 5500-2 VS 6300-2 thinner Odor control carbon pre-filter. Otherwise, both air purifiers share the same 15 x 23.6 x 8.2 in dimension and 360 sq. ft. room size coverage. Airflow is also similar at 230+ cfm dust/ smoke/ pollen free CADR.
WINIX 5500-2 VS 5300-2
With sound reasons most people are undecided between the Winix 5500-2 VS 5300-2. Both purifiers are very similar in many ways. 5500-2 is the higher spec version with better airflow output, AOC carbon filter and remote control. 5300-2 is cheaper which has already tipped the balance of the debate to its side. Either way, both air purifiers have the same dimension (15 x 23.6 x 8.2 in), purifying coverage (360 sq. ft.), CADR (230+ cfm), and 4-stage PlasmaWave filtration. Essential features like Auto mode, air quality sensor, timer, and two years warranty is in on both models.
WINIX 5500-2 VS 5500
Even till this day, many people are still searching for the differences between these two. Let’s begin with the new model: 5500-2. Firstly, it has an updated all black exterior design that looks more suited to modern times. But there’s isn’t any an upgrade on purifying coverage (360 sq. ft.) and dust CADR (243 cfm). Lastly, 5500-2 comes with AOC carbon filter, a built-in timer and 2 years warranty (VS previous 1 year). The “old” 5500 achieve a surprise advantage on airflow, Pollen, and Smoke CADR. There is also a washable HEPA filter. While on both purifiers you find the, 4-stage filtration, PlasmaWave, Auto/ Sleep mode and remote control
WINIX 5500-2 VS C535
Here we also go with 5500-2 air purifier as our choice for the following reasons. Firstly, it has more readily available than the Costco lock C535. Secondly, it has the Filter H kit that normally comes with AOC Advanced Granular Carbon Filter. Thirdly, it has better pricing than the C535. But if you prefer a white exterior design and don’t mind losing the remote control feature you can go for the C535, if it’s in your budget.
HOW DOES WINIX 5500-2 PLASMAWAVE TECHNOLOGY WORK?
The Winix 5500-2 PlasmaWave technology works by generating positive/ negative ions that joins with water vapor to form what is known as hydroxyl. Then the Hydroxyl molecules formed will now be used to kill germs and inhibit chemicals gas particles. There is no harmful substance or gas produced during this process.
FINAL THOUGHTS ON WINIX 5500-2
The Winix 5500-2 has been in the market for awhile now and yet it is still getting a lot of positive reviews and recommendations till date. 86% of the 800plus reviews gave the 5500-2 an average of 4-5 stars. Many are really pleased with the price considering the kind of quality features it has including the presence of the PlasmaWave and true HEPA filtration which performs exceptionally well against dust, allergens and germs and also the auto mode and the fact that it has a remote control.
In terms of the negative reviews, while 9% of the 1-2 star reviewers didn’t agree with the efficiency of the 5500-2, the rest complained that it makes a lot more noise and that it does not last very long.
But in our view, the Winix 5500-2 is our choice because the benefits that comes with this particular purifier is overwhelming when compared with the price.
